I’ve never baked sourdough before. Is this course too advanced for me?Nope! This is a beginner’s course designed for busy humans who don’t want to spend weeks deciphering sourdough lingo. If you can stir flour and water together, you can do this.
I don’t have a sourdough starter. Where can I get one?If you don’t know anyone with an established starter to share,
we suggest ordering Fresh Starter from King Arthur Flour. You’ll follow the directions included on the package to revive it, then you’ll be ready to bake your first loaf in a few days. Another option is to use a dehydrated starter that is easily found online, but I don’t have experience with that.
Do I need fancy equipment? Not really. Two loaf pans or a Dutch oven with a lid, a digital kitchen scale, and common kitchen items like oven mitts and bowls are what’s required.
What kind of ingredients will we use? We’ll start with simple white flour (for consistency and confidence), then branch into white whole wheat and other whole grain flours so you can explore flavor, texture, and nutrition.
Is everything whole-food plant-based?Unlike Clean Food Dirty Girl recipes, we do use some white flour (you can sub white whole wheat, but you’ll have denser loaves), but all of our recipes are fully plant-based with no animal products, oil, or sugar.
How long does it take to bake sourdough? The hands-on time is typically just 25 minutes! Most of the magic happens while it ferments. We’ll share timelines to help you work sourdough into your schedule.
Will I be stuck taking care of my starter every day?Only if you want to! I’ll teach you how to manage your starter so it fits into your schedule and you’re not taking time off work to feed your starter.
What if I kill my starter? It happens to the best of us (even to me when I started). Don’t panic! I’ll show you how to keep your starter happy and what to do if it needs a little TLC. And I’ll share a secret sourdough starter insurance policy tip!
Is this gluten-free friendly? If you’re gluten-free, this course won’t work for you, as gluten-free sourdough is a different process. I’d love to try one day!
